Clingmans Dome

Clingmans Dome

This is the third highest point east of the Mississippi and it is said that on a clear day you can see over a hundred miles. The path is paved leading to the observation tower, however, it is a very steep half mile climb. Don't let this discourage you though. There are benches and boulders along the path to sit and rest. Once you reach the top it will be well worth it because there are very few views that will match this one, especially in the fall.

On the North Carolina / Tennessee border, just off of 441, you will find Clingmans Dome. The access road is about a quarter mile from Newfound Gap. The access road is closed to traffic from December 1 to March 31 and whenever ther is bad weather (Ice, Snow...). If you go in the winter check with the Park Service first. For those who really, really, enjoy hiking you may go in the winter however it is seven miles to the observation tower.
