Old Fort Train Station
Just off of I-40, in down town Old Fort, you will find the Old Fort Train Station/Museum. If you enjoy train memorabilia this is a nice place to visit. The station has been restored and looks as if it’s waiting for passengers to board the next train. Inside you will find the station masters office which has been transformed into a museum. On display they have the station master’s desk, a 3-D map of the train routes through the mountains, baggage scales and other items. There is also a caboose beside the station that you may walk through. It is interesting to see how the crew lived as they worked out on the rails.
There are no doors on the caboose and wasp occasionally make nest inside, so be careful.
Directions
From Ashville NC, go East on I-40. Take exit 72 and in one mile the Depot will be on your right.
From Morganton, go West on I-40. Take exit 73 and turn right onto Catawba Avenue. Drive .4 miles and turn right on W Main Street. The Depot will be on your left.
