Located just outside of the rural city of Mount Airy lies, North Carolina Granite Corporation, the largest open-faced quarry in the world. To this day, structures continue to be built around the world with North Carolina’s state rock, from this very quarry. For over 150 years the NCGC has been harvesting granite from this quarry and will continue for years to come.
Due to restrictions, by the Federal Government, they are not allowed to give tours of the facility any more. However, this does not mean that there is nothing to see. It is a different and really great experience for children and adults alike, especially during working hours. When you visit the quarry there is an observation deck that allows you to see the day to day operations of the quarry. If you happen to be there at the right time you may experience one of several explosions that are set off, during the day. There is also a spur road that allows you to drive alongside the quarry and view it from your vehicle. Even if you visit, when they are closed, the quarry is a massive site to see.
